Greyhound Skin Care: Grooming Dogs with Thin Coats and Sensitive Skin

Adopting a retired racing Greyhound (or owning a Whippet) is an incredibly rewarding experience. But these "couch potatoes" come with a unique physiological trait: paper-thin skin.

Because sighthounds have zero undercoat and very little body fat, their skin is highly exposed. They are prone to dry elbows, flaky coats, and skin tears from minor bumps. Standard grooming routines are often too harsh for them.

The "Less is More" Washing Strategy

Greyhounds do not have the heavy oils of a Labrador. If you wash a Greyhound with a strong detergent shampoo, you will completely strip their delicate lipid barrier, leaving them itchy and dry.

The Solution: Use the Barkmere 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner. Because it uses filtered rainwater and organic coconut oil, it is remarkably low-foaming and gentle. It cleans the coat without aggressive stripping. Better yet, the built-in conditioning properties leave their short hair feeling like velvet.

Protecting the Pressure Points

Because Greyhounds are bony and love to lounge, they frequently develop dry, callous-like patches on their elbows and hocks. They also suffer from dry ear margins.

The Routine: Keep a tin of Bark Butter Balm handy. Massage a small amount into their elbows and the tips of their ears a few times a week. The Jojoba and Vitamin E deeply penetrate the thin skin, keeping it elastic and reducing the chance of the callouses cracking or bleeding.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often should I wash my Greyhound? Because their skin is so thin and they lack a "doggy odor," Greyhounds only need a full bath every 2 to 3 months, or when visibly muddy. For a quick refresh between baths, use a damp towel and a few sprays of the All Day Spritzer.

Do Greyhounds need to be brushed? Yes, but carefully! Never use a sharp metal rake on a sighthound. Use a soft rubber curry brush or a Coat Brush with gentle pins to stimulate blood flow and distribute their natural skin oils without scratching them.
