How to Reduce Dog Shedding: The "De-Shedding" Routine for Double-Coated Breeds

by Bark Butter

If you own a Golden Retriever, Border Collie, or German Shepherd, you know that "shedding season" isn't just a season—it feels like a lifestyle.

While you can't stop a double-coated dog from shedding (it's nature!), you can control where that hair ends up: in the brush, rather than on your carpet.

The Secret: Hydration Releases Hair

Most people think shedding is dry hair falling out. Actually, dry coats hold onto dead hair because of static. To get the dead undercoat to slide out easily, the hair shaft needs to be lubricated and hydrated.

The Barkmere De-Shedding Routine

Step 1: The Loosening Wash Wash with Barkmere 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner.

  • The Science: The Organic Coconut Oil penetrates the coat and adds slip to the individual hairs. This helps loosen the dead undercoat that is trapped against the skin.

  • Crucial: Massage the shampoo in for at least 3 minutes to let the oils work their way down to the skin.

Step 2: The "Velocity" Dry Towel drying creates knots. If you have a hair dryer (cool setting!) or a pet blower, use it. The air forces the loose, wet hair out of the coat.

Step 3: The Spritz & Brush Before you start brushing, spray the dry coat with All Day Spritzer.

  • Why? Brushing a dry coat creates static electricity, which makes hair cling to the dog. The Spritzer neutralises the static and conditions the hair, allowing your Coat Brush or slicker brush to pull out massive amounts of fluff with zero effort.
